Epoxy floor coverage: primer and floor coat

Primer and floor epoxy serve different roles and use different coverage rates. POURLA Epoxy Primer prepares the concrete, while the Epoxy Floor Coat builds a compatible base or finishing layer. Estimate each product separately to plan materials for your garage, workshop, or decorative epoxy floor.

Epoxy primer

225-300sq ft per 1.5-gallon kit

The TDS lists 150-200 sq ft per US gallon. This calculator uses 150 for planning. Primer is available in 1.5- and 3-gallon kits, so select the size you intend to purchase.

Epoxy floor coat

300-360sq ft per 3-gallon kit, TDS basis

The TDS lists 100-120 sq ft per US gallon. This calculator uses 100 for planning. A textured surface or a thicker application can require more material than a smoother, thinner coat.

Example: a 500 sq ft garage floor

For one coat of each product with a 10% allowance, the primer estimate is 3.67 US gallons and the floor-coat estimate is 5.50 US gallons. Round each quantity up using its own kit size. With 1.5-gallon primer kits and 3-gallon floor-coat kits, the purchase quantities are:

Primer: 3 × 1.5-gallon kits
Floor coat: 2 × 3-gallon kits

Calculator assumptions

The calculator uses the lower end of each TDS coverage range, then applies the selected allowance before rounding up. The default 10% is an adjustable planning buffer. Coverage depends on preparation, texture, porosity, and application thickness; the estimate is not a guarantee.

Epoxy floor calculator FAQs

Does this calculate the complete floor system?

No. It estimates the selected product and number of coats. Calculate primer and floor epoxy separately. Flakes, pigments, repairs, and polyaspartic are not included in the kit count.

Are primer and floor epoxy mixed the same way?

No. Primer requires 2 parts A to 1 part B by weight, measured with a scale. Floor epoxy requires 2 parts A to 1 part B by liquid volume, measured in graduated containers. Do not use a volume split for primer.

Can floor epoxy be applied directly to bare concrete?

Prepare the concrete and apply a compatible primer before the epoxy floor coat. A top-coat material estimate does not replace surface preparation or include the primer quantity.

Why can actual epoxy usage differ from the estimate?

Surface profile, porosity, and coating thickness affect coverage. The calculator uses TDS coverage rates and a separate allowance. Measure the area to be coated and review the product instructions for your floor conditions.

Can epoxy or polyaspartic be used as the final top coat?

Epoxy and polyaspartic are separate finishing options for compatible floor systems. Their coverage, mixing, and cure instructions differ. This calculator estimates epoxy products; use the dedicated polyaspartic calculator for a polyaspartic finish.

Should I mix all of the recommended kits at once?

No. The displayed quantity is a purchase estimate. Mix only batches that can be applied within the working time, following the selected product's technical data sheet for batch size and mixing instructions.
