Countertop Epoxy Essentials: Prep & Pour Guide

Achieving a glass-like, durable countertop requires proper preparation. Follow these steps to ensure a professional-grade finish over any existing surface.

1. Surface Preparation (The Most Important Step)

Laminate/Formica: Scuff the entire surface with 80-120 grit sandpaper to ensure the epoxy has a rough profile to grip onto. Clean thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol.
Wood/Concrete: Clean the surface. If the material is highly porous, you MUST apply a thin "Seal Coat" of epoxy first to prevent air bubbles from rising into your final pour.

2. The Flood Coat

Mix the 1:1 ratio slowly but thoroughly for 3-5 minutes. Scrape the sides and bottom of the mixing bucket.
Pour the mixture into the center of the surface and use a 1/8" square-notched trowel to spread it evenly. Let it flow over the edges and use a brush to smooth the drips.

3. Popping Bubbles

Within 10-15 minutes of pouring, quickly sweep a propane torch or heat gun 6-8 inches above the surface. You will see the micro-bubbles instantly pop, leaving a glass-like finish.

Countertop Epoxy Resin is a highly durable, 1:1 mix ratio polymer coating designed specifically for surfaces that experience heavy wear and tear. Unlike art resin, it is formulated to be highly scratch-resistant, heat-resistant, and self-leveling, making it the perfect affordable alternative to replacing old laminate, wood, or concrete countertops.

Can I pour epoxy directly over old laminate or Formica?

Yes! Epoxy bonds incredibly well to old laminate, Formica, Corian, and even tile. The key is preparation. You must scuff the entire surface with 80-120 grit sandpaper to remove the glossy finish, clean it thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol or a degreaser, and then apply a bonding primer before your epoxy pour.

How heat resistant are epoxy countertops?

Pourla Countertop Epoxy is formulated for excellent heat resistance up to 195°F (90°C). This means it can easily handle hot coffee mugs, warm plates, and accidental spills without softening or leaving rings. However, you should still use a trivet or hot pad for pots and pans coming directly off the stove, as extreme heat above 200°F can damage the surface.

How much epoxy do I need for my countertops?

For a standard flood coat (poured at a self-leveling thickness of about 1/8 inch), 1 Gallon of mixed epoxy will cover approximately 12.5 to 15 square feet. If you are applying a thin seal coat first, 1 Gallon will cover up to 40-50 square feet.

How long before I can use my new epoxy countertops?

The epoxy will be dry to the touch in about 24 hours. You can lightly use the countertops (like setting down a glass) after 48-72 hours. However, epoxy takes a full 7 to 30 days to reach its absolute maximum rock-hard cure. We recommend waiting at least 7 days before placing heavy appliances on the surface.

Are epoxy countertops safe for food contact?

Yes. Once Pourla Countertop Epoxy is mixed properly and fully cured (typically after 7 days), the surface is completely inert, non-porous, and complies with FDA guidelines for incidental food contact.

How do I clean and maintain epoxy countertops?

Maintenance is incredibly easy since the surface is non-porous and seamless. Simply clean with mild dish soap and warm water, or any non-abrasive household surface cleaner. Avoid using scouring pads, bleach, or harsh acidic cleaners, as these can dull the high-gloss finish over time.
