HI FRIENDS, I AM TONY, THE CO-FOUNDER OF POURLA EPOXY. IN THIS BLOG, I WILL SHARE THE WHOLE PROCESS OF TURNING A SCRAP PIECE OF WALNUT SLAB INTO A SOFA SIDE TABLE USING THE POURLA DEEP POUR EPOXY

WHY AM I DOING THIS?

I bought a curved piece of walnut slab. I cut off the end of the slab so it’s not so curved. The result is I have this small piece of walnut cut-off that’s the perfect size for a round sofa side table.

Step 1: Cut off the end with a jigsaw

Then clean the wood with chisels and wire brushes. If you're new to woodworking, it's crucial to understand that prepping the wood can significantly impact your final result.

Step 2: Choose the right resin

Since this piece is 1.5 inches thick, I will be using POURLA Deep Pour Epoxy, which is capable of pouring up to 4 inches at once.

POURLA Deep Pour Epoxy has a 2:1 mix ratio. After mixing 2A to 1B, I added black dye to the epoxy since black epoxy plus walnut is the look I’m going for here.

Step 3: Pour!

Before you pour, make sure the mold is properly sealed with silicon and the wood piece is clamped down to avoid it floating up.

Step 4: Demold and Cut to Final Size

After waiting 4 days for the POURLA Deep Pour Epoxy to properly dry, it can be demolded. Since I used Tyvek tape, releasing the epoxy from the mold is super easy.

Then, I used a circle cutting jig with a router to cut a perfect circle out of this piece of black epoxy infused walnut.

Step 5: Sanding

This is one of the most important steps and it is also the most boring step unfortunately. But if you want your final piece to be gorgeous, you have to sand it meticulously from 80-600 grit.

Finally, an oil-based finish is applied to the piece and here is the result!
