WHY I AM DOING THIS?

When I was camping, I found this piece of wood next to my tent. It is trash in other people’s eyes but I knew I could make something beautiful and unique out of it with POURLA epoxy resin.

STEP 1: CLEAN UP THE WOOD

If you're new to woodworking, it's crucial to understand that prepping the wood can significantly impact your final result. Begin your project by filling any bug holes or unwanted cracks in the wood for a smoother finish.

After an hour of cleaning, which involved chisel and wire brush wheels, this is what the wood looked like. The cavities can be filled with transparent epoxy resin and I can make a night lamp out of it.

STEP 2: SEAL COAT

Once the wood has been cleaned, it's essential to apply a seal coat of epoxy resin to fill all the small cavities. This step is crucial in preventing bubbles from forming during the final casting.

Then I realized this piece of wood can be cut in half so I can make 2 lamps! So I resaw it on the bandsaw.

STEP 3: MAKING THE MOLD

For this project, I only needed to pour epoxy at the base of the wood, so I built a two-sided mold for easier handling. To prevent any leaks, I carefully applied silicone to the mold’s faces, edges, and especially the corners. Taking the time to apply silicone thoroughly is crucial—dealing with leaks is no fun!

STEP 4: FIRST LAYER

The first layer is poured! And no leaking. The POURLA Art Epoxy Resin is formulated for 1/4 inch thick at most.

STEP 5: SECOND LAYER

After waiting for 8-10 hours (the wait time could vary depending on the room temperature), The second layer of epoxy resin is poured. When pouring epoxy resin, it is helpful to pour slowly to avoid bubbles.

DONE!

After waiting 24 hours, the epoxy resin is fully cured and ready to be demolded. To ensure the best glossy and clear finish, I sanded it from 80 to 2000 grit. Then I applied an oil based finish. And here are the results
